Frances Candler Shumway, 90, died March 12, 2011. She was the second daughter of Samuel Charles and Frances Godfrey Candler and the granddaughter of Bishop Warren A. Candler. Her sister, Caroline Candler Hunt and brother-in-law Lowry Hunt preceded her in death. Ms. Shumway was born in Atlanta and grew up in Covington, attending the public schools there. Upon receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from Randolph-Macon Woman?s College in 1941, she accepted a position as history instructor at Lagrange College where she taught until 1942. Then deciding to further her education, she received her Master?s Degree in Latin American Studies from Duke University in 1943 and became Assistant Professor of History at Wesleyan College where she taught until 1952. During that time she often spent her summers in Mexico or South America studying the history and cultures of those countries.
She retired in 1974 after twenty years of military and civilian service with the U.S. Army during which she had overseas assignments in Japan, Germany and France. She was fluent in Spanish and also spoke German, French, and even some Japanese. Following retirement and return to the family home in Madison, her passion became serving as President/President Emeritus of Global Health Action, a non-profit world health and development organization based in Atlanta. In this capacity, she gave generously of her time and resources and traveled on several occasions to developing countries including India and Haiti. She looked forward each year to welcoming the new foreign students who came to Atlanta to improve their skills in nursing, leadership and administration. She often accompanied them on visits to area churches to tell their stories and promote their causes.
An avid world traveler, Ms. Shumway visited every continent of the world, sometimes taking her niece, nephews or great-nephews on trips with her. For mny years, she continued to correspond with friends she made while living and travelling in other parts of the world. She also loved gardening and could often be seen out walking her beloved dogs. She was a member of several organizations including The National Society of Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution and The American Association of University Women. She was a member of Madison United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her niece, Suellen Hunt Sheppard of Covington; nephews and their wives, Charles Candler and Annita Hunt and Lowry Weyman and Lyn Hunt, all of madison as well as six great nieces and nephews and nine great great nieces and nephews whom she loved very dearly. Graveside services will be held Monday, March 14, 2011 at Oxford Historical Cemetery in Oxford, GA. Following the service, the family will receive friends at Ms. Shumway's residence in Madison from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Memorial may be made to Global health Action P.O. Box 15086 Atlanta, GA 30333.
