Brent was a career officer in the United States Navy from 1825 to 1861. He assumed his first command in 1857, the U.S.S. Marion. With the outbreak of hostilities in 1861, he resigned his commission and took up the confederate command of the Pensacola navy yard. In October 1863, Brent became the commander of confederate naval operations west of the Mississippi. | ||
