GAINES, JR., McMURRAY World War II Veteran and Retired AT&T Manager. The Memorial service and burial for McMurray Gaines, Jr., a retired US Navy Commander and former Engineering Manager of AT&T will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, TN on August 12, 2011 at 11 a.m. Mr. Gaines, age 91, died of natural causes in Atlanta, GA on August 7, 2011. Born and educated in Nashville, Mr. Gaines was a great-grandson of former Tennessee Governor Neill S. Brown, and a direct descendent of Colonel John Donelson, one of the founders of Nashville. After graduating from Vanderbilt University in 1943 with a degree in Electrical Engineering, he volunteered for military service and was commissioned as an Ensign in the Naval Reserve. He completed advanced training in radio and radar techniques at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was assigned duty with Naval Air Forces in the Pacific theater. Mr. Gaines was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA), a member of the Naval Reserve Association, and a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the Telephone Pioneers of America. Surviving are his sister, Mary Gaines Beauchamp of Raleigh, NC; nephew, Dr. David Gaines Beauchamp of Wilmington, NC; and great nieces and nephews. H.M.
