The marriage was dynastic in its origin: Alfonso X, king of Castile, had meddled in the rebellion of his neighbor, the English duchy of Aquitaine (or Gascony) and thus won a bargaining chip with Henry III. In order to have Castile bow out of the Gascon troubles, Alfonso offered his half-sister's hand to Edward, but not without having him suitably endowed first. Realpolitik notwithstanding, the marriage of Edward and Eleanor was one of the great love matches of medieval Europe. [5]
