- In April, 1862 ( I think) W.T. Guthrie and Richard T. joined the 34th Alabama, company 'D' and they were in the war together. There were other Trammells in the war but I cannot remember if they were in the same regiment but I think different companies. When I can get to my records ... all my new research is still on my computer....I can re-check all info.
MANY families went in together so it was and that turned into a disaster for many a family.
William Thomas Guthrie lost two brothers in 1863 and 1864... he and Richard Trammell were lost in July 1864( NEVER FOUND any grave except UNKNOWNS) and Emily Easley who passed away in 1862 with her 10 year daughter ( in a fever epidemic. Her nephew Richard S. Easley who was married to William Thomas' sister, Elizabeth Guthrie was lost at The Battle of Fussell's Mill in VA. 1 August 1864.
In all the Gutheries lost 2 brothers and a brother-in-law, (married to Elizabeth Guthrie)..... One brother lost his leg and another an arm. Rufus Guthrie, who lost a leg at the 2nd Battle of Manassas and left for dead, came home somehow and went on to become the richest man in Walton and Forsyth counties, a politician and a GREAT help to the widows and orphans of his own family and many others in the area.
William Thomas' wife Mary Julia Trammell Guthrie returned to Georgia to raise her son Luther Oscar and daughter Nancy Alice with a new home from Rufus and in later years Luther ran several business' of his own with help from Rufus. Then Luther was one of the pillars of the Walnut Grove and even Loganville communities. He and his father in law John Titshaw started the Corinth Christian Church and they are all buried there. Luther had married Mary Ann Titshaw and they had 6 children...but on Aug.1 1897 his wife, soon to deliver a baby was struck by lightening while standing near the well and killed. He then in heavy grief sold his home and moved to Loganville and started another Blacksmith shop, a furniture store and general store. His widowed mother, Mary Julia Trammell Guthrie went along with him to help raise the children. My grandfather Richard Preston born in 1888, was apprenticed to a relative in the blacksmith shop at age 13 .
He did that work till he moved his family to Atlanta right before WWII( 1940) so his wife could be seen by heart doctors regularly. He had taken a job as a metal worker in the Fisher Body plant and right away was a foreman... The war was declared and he worked long hours building WILLIS JEEPS. [3]
