    • Rumblings & Ruminations

Is John Dickinson a child of Joel Putnam and Sarah Middleton of Hancock County? He is not entered at Jones' Coweta County Chronicles. However, Willie Kate Dickinson Henderson mentions him as a possible son in her research, but without attribution. His place of birth is identified as Hancock County by Sams' Wayfarers in Walton and the names of two of the boys recorded there have a familial ring too familiar to be coincidental: Joel Putman (Putnam?) and John Simms. Wayfarers in Walton, Anita B. Sams, (Monroe, Georgia: The General Charitable Foundation of Monroe, Georgia, Inc., 1967) 783-784. It should also be noted that Mary, probably the oldest of Joel and Sarah's children, was a resident of Walton County before removing to Alabama with the Trammell clan.

    • Biography

John Dickinson (b. 1787, Hancock County; d. 1861) was one of Walton's earliest Settlers, and his name appears as a local family head on the 1920 census. He married Frances Tompson in 1818, and together they set up housekeeping three miles west of Monroe on the Monroe-Walnutgrove Road, one-half mile west of the Alcovy River. Both are buried there in a family plot.

As a resident of Davis's district, John drew land in the 1821 Lottery. In 1827, as a soldier, he was also fortunate, again receiving property. His last lottery parcel was obtained in the 1832 Cherokee Gold Lottery. A man of initiative and substance, Mr. Dickinson owned 1,279 acres by 1852, carrying on farming operations with 22 slaves. By 1860, just before his death, he owned 32 slaves.
