CHAPEL HILL - Elizabeth Grier Bolton, a resident of Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill, died Monday, February 14, 2005.

She was 92. She was born July 9, 1912 at the home of her maternal grandparents in Charlotte, NC. She was a teacher, writer, and librarian.

Elizabeth lived in Millen, GA until she moved to Madison, GA at the age of 6. She went to school in Madison through 9th grade while her father was the Pastor of First Baptist Church in Madison. Her high school days were completed in Hendersonville, NC where she graduated in 1929. Her family had moved there in 1927 when her father was Field Secretary for Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY and could live anywhere they wished. The Bolton family then moved to Colerain, NC during Elizabeth's college days. After she spent two years in Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, Elizabeth transferred to UNC at Chapel Hill and received her BA from UNC in 1933. She taught high school English and French for two years in Welcome, NC and Scotts, NC.

Elizabeth moved to Anderson, IN where she worked three years for the YWCA as the Activities Director. She lived in New Jersey for three years before moving to New York City where she worked part time for the YWCA while receiving her Master's Degree in Personnel Administration at Teachers College, Columbia University. Following that, Elizabeth worked in the Personnel Department at NJ College for Women in New Brunswick, NJ; for the USO in Jacksonville, NC during WWII; for the YMCA in Cincinnati, OH; in the Personnel Department at Duke University in Durham, NC; and as a teacher and Dean of Women at Elon College in Elon College, NC.

Elizabeth returned to UNC for a year to obtain another MA in Library Science in 1953. From 1953 until 1956, Elizabeth taught English and was a librarian for the US Navy's school for dependents in Naples, Italy and Izmir, Turkey. She then returned to Chapel Hill and became the librarian at the Rare Book Room in Wilson Library at UNC until she retired in 1978.

Two of Elizabeth's strongest interest were always writing, and especially poetry. She had written three books The Two-Timer and Other Stories, The Heart Speaks (a book of poems), and Papa was a Georgia Preacher (a book of essays). She was a member of the North Carolina Poetry Society, Friday Noon Poetry Club, and University Baptist Church.

Survivors include nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her brother, Robert L. Bolton Jr., and her sister, Louise Bolton Jones Stribling.

A funeral service will be held at 11am on Friday, February 18, 2005 at the University Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Burial will be in Charlotte, NC.
