Sibyl was the sister of Patrick de Salisbury, an early supporter of king Stephen. The two men had feuded when John threw up a castle at Ludgershall. Patrick's sympathies eventually turned Angevin, making the marriage advantageous for both families. Aline was put aside on grounds of consanguinity.
