    • Badlesmere was a victim of Edward II's bloodlust after the defeat of the Earl of Lancaster at Boroughbridge.

Badlesmere had made common cause with his March allies over the depredations of the Despensers and so earned the enmity of the king. After a settlement was reached with Edward, Lady Badlesmere blundered into a provocation by refusing the queen the hospitality of Leeds Castle. Lancaster, who despised Badlesmere, took the side of the king. Fractured, the baronial alliance was brought to heel piecemeal. The Mortimers were forced to surrender at Shropshire. Lancaster and Hereford were defeated at Boroughbridge.
