      OAK RIDGE, Tenn.

      David Spencer Zachry Jr. died May 28, 2010, at his home. He was born in Chattanooga on June 3, 1921, and resided in Oak Ridge since 1947. His parents, D.S. and Elizabeth Davis Zachry, and his brother, William Henry Zachry, preceded him in death.

      David is survived by his wife of 63 years, Deannie Harwood Zachry of Oak Ridge; daughter, Patricia Ann "Pan" McElroy (Robert L.) of Oak Ridge; son, D. Spencer Zachry III of Franklin, Tenn.; grandchildren, R. Lee (Stacie) McElroy, Zachry McElroy, Chris (Kistiana) McElroy, Baker Zachry and Taylor Zachry; great-grandchildren, Madeline McElroy and Charlotte McElroy; and his brother's children, Bill (Lynda) Zachry, John (Shirley) Zachry, and Ellen (Ron) Craig.

      David graduated from Chattanooga City High, class of 1939, the U.S. Naval Academy, class of 1944, and the University of Tennessee Law College in 1953. He was admitted to practice in the courts of Tennessee, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

      During World War II, he served in the Pacific theatre on the destroyer USS Grayson (1944-45) and he remained in the Naval Reserve until retired as Commander in 1961, being a founding member of the Naval Research Reserve Unit in Oak Ridge.

      He was employed by Monsanto Chemical Co., at Clinton Laboratories in 1947, and at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, ERDA, and the Department of Energy, serving as Chief, Oak Ridge Patent Group, from 1960-1979.

      He was a member of the Rotary Club of Oak Ridge since 1976, and of the United Church since 1948.

      During retirement, he became an active volunteer with Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, serving patients' families in the surgery waiting rooms for 30 years. An active tennis player in Oak Ridge leagues in his earlier years, he later enjoyed golfing with many special friends. After giving up active participation in sports, he used his computer to maintain contacts with old friends and world events.

      A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the United Church Chapel on the Hill with a reception following. Interment will be earlier that day at 11 a.m. in Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
