    • Rumblings & Ruminations

William A. Jones' father, William B., makes his first appearance in a census during 1860. He is enumerated in Stewart County, Georgia, on 18 June 1860 along with his wife Susan Baldwin. (Thus, William A. does not appear.) Sometime thereafter, the Baldwins, Singers and Jones removed to Butler County, Alabama. These families were in Alabama by 1862, when Frank Xzenford Jones was born.

William A.'s fate is unknown at this point in the research. Susan was remarried to George Kinchen by 1866 and so it is quite probable that the boys never really knew their father. The boys were raised in the company of numerous maternal relatives, however. The 1870 census shows the Hicks' household to be surrounded by these relatives: grandparents George and Obedience Baldwin; great grandmother Temperance Singer; great uncle John Singer; and John (George's brother) and aunt Temperance Hicks.

This researcher (a Jones' descendant) has been related by DNA testing to a descendant of Susan Singer Bell, Obedience Singer Baldwin's sister.
