    • Is Garlington Leake Samuel's father? Samuel does not appear by name in a census until 1860, where he is listed alongside wife Amanda. (He is conspicuously absent from the 1850 enumeration where Amanda is listed in her father's household, along with their infant son, Alexander.) And no son is mentioned in Garlington's will.

There are five Leakes (or Leaks) listed in the 1840 Census for Pike County, Georgia, when Samuel would have been about 12 years of age: Garlington and William M., in District 545; John and Wesley in District 581; and Milton in District 505. John Leak has no other males living in his household. William H. has only one other male (under 5). Garlington, on the other hand, has four other males in his household (two 10-15), Wesley has six (one 5-10 and one 10-15) and Milton has two (one 5-10 and one 15-20).

In 1850 (about age 22 for Samuel), the male Leakes living in Pike County, District 68 (along with the Dickinsons) were Wesley (age 44) and Garlington (age 49). Since Wesley's wife, Eleanor, would have been about ten years of age at the time of Samuel's birth, it seems reasonable to exclude Wesley, absent another previous spouse. Garlington's spouse, Eliza, would have been about 24 years of age at the time of Samuel's birth. (And continuing with an argument of propinquity, in 1860, Garlington Leak was the immediate neighbor of Amanda's brother, James Alpheus Dickinson.) Additionally, the 1883 map of Spalding County places Garlington's son-in-law, James Hunt Rivers, adjacent to the property owned by Samuel's mother-in-law, Mary Askew Dickinson.

Had the South in her border
    A hero to spare,
Or a heart at her altar,
Lo! its life's blood was there!
    And the black battle-grime
    Might never disguise
    The smile of the South
